San Mateo County Times, July 10, 2003Forgaard turns his lens to the offbeat, the forgotten, and the unnoticed. He finds what others might miss. His rusting fragments of automobiles explore themes of both nostalgia and loss. And his Metalscapes series, junkyard abstractions from California to West Virginia, offer an amalgam of color, texture, balance and tension that produces a satisfying perception of pure form.
The whole of a place or thing is realized through an examination of its parts," Forgaard has said. "A rusted bit of machinery, for example, can tell a story there is hidden history, utility, drama and ultimately loss there, and viewers, through imagination and remembrance, can flesh the story out for themselves. But I work for the visual appeal first. If an image engages the eye, the mind will follow.
...Forgaards best photographs live somewhere between the journalistic, the abstract, and the oddly beautiful...
